Commonwealth scholarship commission UK offers 900 scholarships to commonwealth countries each year.

Commonwealth scholarship scheme was started 60 years back in 1959 and is initiated by a group of students from Oxford university. Since then it has been providing thousands of students with better education and helping them to play a role in development of their home countries. Universities from around the UK support the studies of brilliant students from these countries and train them in UK, so that they can implement their learning in different sectors for development purposes.

Chair of Commonwealth scholarship commission UK, Richard Middleton said that there is no role of UK government in selection of the scholars and the scheme is highly based on merit and is for the common good of the 52 associated countries. He said that no matter how worse the peace and economical situation gets, it will have no effect whatsoever on the commission's policies for common good.

Universities in Liverpool are playing an important role in this scheme. All the three universities i.e. University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University and Liverpool Hope University, take several scholars from these countries through this scheme. Liverpool being known as a student city and hometown of one of the world ranked university is center of attention to many of these scholars.

One of the Commonwealth scholar Adewola Adekola, from University of Liverpool said that the city is full of opportunities for students. Career fairs, internship opportunities and several student activities are helping him to learn a lot and he is hopeful to implement the learning from UK to his home country. He said that getting the scholarship for UK is the best experience of his life, as otherwise he would not be able to afford the study expense.

Some sources claim that the purpose of these scholarships is to increase the ranking of the universities. However, no matter what anyone claims the ultimate benefit is going towards the developing countries and their citizens.
